🚽 Litter Box 101: Keeping the Tray Clean, Odor-Free, and Feline-Friendly

Hello Clean Crew and KittyGlow Customers!

The litter box setup is the single most common source of household odor and the leading cause of inappropriate elimination (accidents outside the box). Cats are meticulously clean creatures, and if their "bathroom" doesn't meet their standards, they will find an alternative. A few simple rules ensure a clean, odor-free, and stress-free environment for everyone.

Ā

1. The Rule of N+1

Ā

  • The Principle: You should have one more litter box than the number of cats you own.

  • Why: This reduces territorial disputes and ensures a clean option is always available. Place boxes in multiple, quiet, private locations throughout the home.

Ā

2. Size and Type Matters

Ā

  • Size: The box must be large enough for the cat to completely turn around inside without stepping in soiled litter. Many commercially available boxes are too small.

  • Hoods: Avoid covered or hooded boxes, especially in multi-cat households. Hoods trap odor and make the cat feel vulnerable or cornered. An open tray is generally preferred by cats.

Ā

3. The Scooping and Cleaning Routine

Ā

  • Daily Scooping: Scoop solids and clumps at least twice a day. This is non-negotiable for odor control and cat happiness.

  • Litter Depth: Maintain a litter depth of at least 3-4 inches (7-10 cm) to ensure the cat can dig properly and the waste is fully covered.

  • Deep Clean: Completely empty the box, wash it with mild soap and water (avoiding harsh, scented chemicals), and refill with fresh litter once every 2-4 weeks.
