šŸ“¦ Smooth Move: Tips for Helping Your Cat Adjust to a New Home Environment

Hello Moving Masters and KittyGlow Customers!

Moving is one of the most stressful events for a cat. They are creatures of routine, territory, and scent, and a change in environment can cause intense anxiety, hiding, and even health issues. Strategic planning focused on scent and security is essential to help your cat transition smoothly into their new home.

Ā

1. The "Base Camp" Strategy

Ā

  • The Safe Room: Upon arrival, immediately place your cat into one small, quiet room (like a bathroom or guest room) that has been set up with their food, water, toys, and litter box. This is their Base Camp.

  • Scent Familiarity: Place the carrier, their old blanket, and their favorite scratching post in the room. New scents are terrifying; familiar scents are calming.

  • Containment: Keep them contained in this room for at least 24 hours, or until they are acting normally (eating, using the box, playing).

Ā

2. Controlled Exploration

Ā

  • Scent Marking: Once they are comfortable in the Base Camp, begin scent-swapping. Rub a cloth on your cat's face (collecting their scent) and rub it on furniture in the new house. This makes the new home smell like them.

  • Supervised Visits: Open the door and allow supervised exploration of the rest of the house, keeping the Base Camp door open so they can retreat if overwhelmed.

Ā

3. Maintaining Routine

Ā

Maintain their feeding schedule, play schedule, and bedtime routine exactly as before. Predictability is the key to reducing anxiety and rebuilding their confidence in the new, strange territory.
