šŸ‘¶ Furry Family Introductions: Safely Introducing Your Cat to a New Baby

Hello Growing Families and KittyGlow Customers!

The arrival of a baby brings immense change—new sounds, new smells, and a disruption of the cat's routine and territory. The goal is to prepare your cat for these changes before the baby arrives, ensuring the transition is one of curiosity, not fear or jealousy. Safety and slow acclimation are paramount.

Ā

1. Pre-Baby Acclimation (Sounds and Scents)

Ā

  • Sound: Start playing recordings of baby noises (crying, cooing) at a low volume and gradually increase the volume over weeks. Associate the sounds with positive things (treats, dinner, playtime).

  • Scent: Before the baby comes home, bring a blanket, hat, or item of clothing the baby has worn home from the hospital. Let the cat sniff it and rub their scent on it, associating the baby's smell with their own territory.

Ā

2. The Safe Retreat

Ā

  • Prepare a Sanctuary: Ensure the cat has a designated, baby-free retreat (like a high cat tree or a room the baby cannot access). This allows them to escape when overwhelmed.

  • Routine: Maintain the cat's feeding and playtime routine as much as possible, giving them attention even when the baby is present to prevent resentment.

Ā

3. Supervised First Meetings

Ā

  • Controlled: Keep the first meetings calm and supervised. Do not force the cat to interact.

  • Association: While holding the baby, give the cat a favorite treat or start a brief, rewarding play session. This helps the cat associate the baby's presence with positive rewards.

Never leave the cat and baby unsupervised, even for a moment.
